Personal Statement

As a young child I began to develope a love for animals. I'm not quit sure of my age but it was around the first grade. One of my best friends at the time had two Great Danes. I remember going to her house just to play with her dogs and she would get upset with me for not spending any time with her. My father had a fear of all animals no matter how small they were so he was horrified when I finally asked for a pet. For years this went on and he always replied no. As a result, for years I spent a lot of time at my friends houses who had any sort of pet. Finally, around grade five my dad caved and bought me a chocolate bunny of whom I named Wiggles, because she wiggled her nose a lot. I loved that bunny, but the only problem was that she bothered my allergies.

Over a year or so, I no longer had really bad allergies and today I understand why. Children born with a household pet are less likely to develope allergy problems when they get older. Eventually they become immune to the allergines. This is what began to happen to me after I got Wiggles. If my dad had of known this, then maybe I would not have developed asthma as bad as I did.

Pets can also help a person in the mental aspect. It's been shown that when someone experiencing stress does something as simple as pet a dog, their stress level begins to come down. Someone who has a stressful job would benefit from having a pet that would relieve the stress they experience at work. Your body releases a good hormone called oxytocin (reduces stress) when you pet or play with a dog and reduces the production of a bad stress hormone called cortisol.

Many people rely on pets to help them get through their everyday lives. Animals have the ability to tell when there is something wrong with a human. This is ecspecially helpful to someone who has a disability such as epilepsy. Pets like these would be called service animals. They are specially trained to also lead people such as the blind or people with prosthetics who can not get around very well.
